How to Travel with Just a Carry-On: The Art of Packing Light in Style
A step-by-step guide on how to pack for your trip with one carry-on bag.

Warm up to the idea of travelling with only a carry-on bag, no matter what, all while looking the business...
Introduction to Carry-On Travel
I've travelled for fifteen years with the Italian leather carry-on bag pictured in the photo above, and a small camera bag.
I've been all over the world like this.
Through jungles, deserts, mountains, at sea on sailing ships, through wind, rain, sun, snow, and in so many bloody airplanes, trains, cars, cabs, and wild runs for any of these I was running late for that I lost track at last count in the tens of thousands.
I've managed to remain reasonably smartly dressed, and have brought all manner of wonderful stuff back from around the world.
Here's why I do it:
Why Carry-On Only?
0% Chance of Lost Luggage Means Faster, Smoother, Simpler
This means you can be bolder and quicker with your travel plans. I've noticed lost baggage incidents going through the roof since the unnamable events (we all remember). When your bag is with you, you’re free to move.
Off you go, out of the (usually awful) airport environment, in a cab or transfer, and whoosh (!) you're off to your hotel or BnB. No waiting, no fussing, no trollies, no hauling. Up and away…
Access to Unique Accommodations
Some of the most special places to stay are simply not that accessible to people with a battalion of rolling suitcases. Tiny hillside villages, BnBs up four narrow staircases, or remote countryside inns—this is where the charm is.
Hired help works great at 5* hotels in big cities, sure, and you can have a private driver out in the countryside. But it's a lot less practicable in the most spectacular, intimate, and vernacular places you’re really going to remember, when being able to be nimble is the name of the game.
Your Carry-On Travel Packing List Strategy
Here are the core principles to turn you into a seasoned pro traveller:
1. Pack your carry-on for a maximum ten-day window.
Do laundry within that. If travelling for fewer than ten days, reduce the number of undergarments to 1 set per day for the duration of your trip.
2. Pick versatile garments that will see you through from day to evening.
Think about about colours that combine with everything – navy, beige, black, all great choices. Default to slightly smarter & dressier choices than normal, as these are much more flexible than being too casual.
Think about temperature bands as well, and pack appropriately.
For both men & women, a white button up shirt or blouse is always a great choice to have available, whether it's for a date, evening out, a business meeting, or just looking the part in London or Paris.
For both men and women, having a blazer to wear goes a long way in terms of some warmth as needed, and another level of smartness if needed.
And for men, having a single necktie handy in your bag just in case will open doors when you least expect it.
Ballerina flats for ladies are your friend. You can wear them with chinos or jeans, you can wear them with your evening dresses.
Likewise, for men, a couple of pairs of loafers—wear one pair in suede, pack a pair in calfskin—will serve you very well, and can be worn all day in considerable comfort.
If you are attending a formal event (meaning a suit for men, or an evening gown for women), you're best served taking a garment bag. Drape this over your bag in the airport, and you are unlikely to have any grief with the airline staff.
If you need an overcoat, wear it, or if too warm at your departure, toss it over your arm. In no airline in the world is a coat considered an additional baggage item, though it surely would fill one of your bags if packed.
4. Don't forget to use your personal item.
A handbag for ladies, or a briefcase or camerabag for men, depending on whether you need a laptop. There's plenty of space here to add in sunglasses/glasses, contacts, a bit of spf cream, a notebook, and some simple medications—and some excellent ear defenders or ear plugs.
5. Remember to leave some space.
Even if travelling by train (one of my favourite journies is Berlin to Vienna) where liquids rules & carry-on rules don't apply, you'll have to carry your bag sooner or later, and you'll probably want room to buy something. You can always buy a cheap duffel and check it on the way back home.
SUMMARY
That's it.
Most people overestimate what they'll need, and end up hauling it around, having the airline lose it, and then not having space to bring back the fun stuff they inevitably find.
I've made lists for women (covering women's more complicated needs), vetted by several very well-travelled friends who always turn up looking extremely chic.
I've also made a list for men, based on my own experiences, and those of friends & colleauges.
Before you know it, you'll be travelling like a seasoned pro.
Carry-On Packing List for Women
Carry-on packing list for a ten + day trip. If travelling for a shorter period, reduce the undergarments to 1/day accordingly.
SOCKS & UNDERGARMENTS
These go straight into a packing cube, and go into the bag.
10 pairs of socks. MAX. Pack 1/day for shorter trips. Laundry if longer.
10 pairs of panties. MAX. Pack 1/day for shorter trips. Laundry if longer.
3-4 bras, appropriate for the below choices.
CORE CLOTHING
The strategy is to pick things which are compatible, and cover a variety of situational use-cases.
3–4 tops. Compatible with lots of bottoms, and a high-quality 100% wool/cashmere jumper to keep you warm for cool evenings.
2–3 dresses. Possibly more if they pack down small but try not to PUSH it, you want room to buy things!
2–3 trousers or skirts. Choose things that work across multiple situations: walking around town, smarter for going out to dinner, something more adventurous.
Cotton Laundry bag. A shoe dustcover bag works well, and keeps separation.
SHOES
Remember that you will be wearing a pair. Pack a max of two pairs, for three in total.
1 comfortable-but-smart pair. For walking about in (cute flats or low heels)
1 pair for evenings out. A bit nicer and smarter, but which could tolerate some walking, which is guaranteed to happen.
Cotton Shoe Bag. This keeps your shoes clean, and your clothes clean.
ACCESSORIES | JEWELRY
Travel Jewelry Case. Only if needed.
TOILETRIES
Imagine your baseline routine, that you might do after a late night out, and stick to that rather than bringing everything.
You’ll want two cases: one for liquids, one for dry goods. This saves worrying about leaks, and helps manage airport security.
LIQUIDS CASE
Get little glass travel dropper bottles from ebay in different sizes for liquids. Aluminum screw-top pots from ebay for pastes/waxes/creams. Spray bottles as needed.
Skincare | Face
Makeup remover.
Face wash
Moisturiser

Face serum
SPF daily.
Lip balm with SPF
Makeup. (such as: mascara, brow pen, eyeliner, lipstick, one colour eyeshadow)
Hygiene & Eyes

Mouth wash
Contact lens
Saline solution
Deodorant. Ideally a liquid one. 50-60ml should last about a month.
Hair
Shampoo. Dry shampoo if needed.
Conditioner | Leave-in conditioner.
DRY PRODUCTS CASE

Floss
Hair
Comb
Headband
Hair clips
Grooming & Hygiene
Makeup brushes
Tweezers

Razor.
Loofa
Cotton buds
Period Supplies. Take whatever is appropriate for you.
Bandaids/Plasters.
Earplugs. Toss a package in here. Non-negotiable.
MEDICATIONS
Paracetamol | Ibuprofen.
Immodium.
Supplements. Take your minimum maintenance things.
Essential Medications (dictated by your body & your doctor)
Find the smallest practicable container (I have a fold-out one) which can accommodate your needs.
Finally, if you'd like more inspiration Reddit's 'R/HerOneBag' subreddit has ongoing helpful posts and is worth a follow.

If this is new for you:

MEDICATIONS
Imodium. Damage control in emergencies.
Painkillers (Paracetamol or your choice)
Strong decongestant (in case of a nasty sinus headache)
Supplements. Take the minimum maintenance routine.
Essential Medications (dictated by your body & your doctor)
