Planning

Lima is quite large, and the areas you might wish to visit are quite spread out. This sort of layout rewards a strategic approach, where you aim to explore nearby places of interest together, before switching gears to somewhere else.

Staying in Miraflores or Barranco provides convenient access to most sites, and a more relaxed atmosphere than the bustling city center, which you can make the trip to go and visit.

Be prepared for the city’s mild desert climate—pack light layers and sunscreen.

Huaca Pucllana: Closed Tuesdays. Has an extensive onsite museum, flora & fauna park, et cetera, which are worth spending time with.

Museo Larco, consistently considered one of the best museums in all of South America: Open daily with evening hours; purchase tickets online to speed things up.

Dining Reservations: For Lima’s renowned restaurants, especially the internationally acclaimed ones, making reservations weeks in advance is probably your best bet.

DAY I

Historic Center Exploration

Begin at Plaza Mayor, visiting the Cathedral, Government Palace, and Archbishop’s Palace.

After lunch, visit the San Francisco Monastery for its spectacular library, catacombs, and fascinating history.

Enjoy a traditional Peruvian dinner in the historic center, starting with some rustic classics, ceviche, lomo saltado (stir-fried beef), or aji de gallina (creamy, spiced chicken stew), for example.

DAY II

Miraflores & Huaca Pucllana

Visit Huaca Pucllana for a guided tour of the adobe pyramid and its associated museum and flora & fauna gardens.

After lunch, stroll along the Malecón walkway by the sea.

While you’re in the neighbourhood, use the excuse to go for contemporary (read: slightly upscale) Peruvian cuisine at a top Miraflores restaurant.

DAY III

Bohemian Barranco & Pre-Columbian Gold

Ideally you'll have private transport for this day, just to make life easier.

Spend some time with Barranco’s colorful streets and art galleries, including the iconic Puente de los Suspiros, or Limeño Bridge of Sighs.

Head to Mercado de Surquillo to sample local street food. This is a great spot to score a ceviche for lunch.

For the afternoon, head to the famous ‘Gold Museum’ of Museo Larco’s for its extensive collections of pre-Columbian art, and finish up your day there.

Depending on where you are staying, you might want to head back and freshen up a bit, or head back to Barranco for a bit of nightlife and ultimately dinner.

You might also want to stay longer, and here’s why we think you should:

Extending your stay in Lima allows for deeper immersion into its diverse neighborhoods, culinary schools, and nearby attractions like the Pachacamac archaeological site.

On the other hand, a day trip to a coastal town such as Paracas to go revel in the beauty of its beach might be just the ticket.
