OVERVIEW

Iceland’s capital and the northernmost capital in the world, Reykjavik is a city of contrasts: where contemporary Nordic design meets centuries-old Viking history, and urban sophistication coexists with untamed natural beauty.

It’s a city that feels small enough to know intimately, and yet it still has enough to surprise you. From its colorful rooftops to the dramatic landscapes just beyond its borders, Reykjavik is truly both a gateway and a destination.

Here's what we think should form the core of your experience:

Culture & History

Reykjavik is steeped in Iceland’s storied past, from the Viking Age to its rise as a modern cultural hub. Begin at the National Museum of Iceland to trace the nation’s history, or step into the Saga Museum to immerse yourself in the lore of Icelandic sagas.

Don’t miss Hallgrímskirkja, the city’s iconic church whose towering spire dominates the skyline. Take the elevator to the top for panoramic views of the colorful houses below and the mountains beyond.

Just a short stroll away, the Harpa Concert Hall stands as a beacon of contemporary Icelandic design, its geometric glass façade inspired by the basalt columns found in nature. Reykjavik is also the birthplace of numerous literary and artistic movements.

There is a quietly thriving art scene in the many small galleries scattered throughout the city, and the Reykjavik Art Museum is a chance to explore Iceland’s most celebrated heroes.

The Call of the Wild

Reykjavik is the perfect jumping-off point for adventures in Iceland’s breathtaking wilderness.

Chase the Northern Lights in winter, explore the Golden Circle’s geysers and waterfalls, or haver a soak in the Blue Lagoon’s geothermal waters, here you will find a city that connects you effortlessly to the country’s natural wonders.

Closer to the city, Reykjavik’s harbor offers the chance to see humpback whales, minke whales, and dolphins, all while taking in views of the city from the sea. And a quick trip to hike the volcanic landscapes of Mount Esja, visible from Reykjavik, will get your foot in the door of the rawness of the real Iceland.

Cuisine & Nightlife

Reykjavik’s culinary scene has transformed in recent years, combining traditional Icelandic ingredients with bold modern flavors for a really lovely contemporary experience. You can also try classical local specialties like plokkfiskur (a fish stew) or lamb, and if you are well and truly one of ‘those people’, one can consider the more adventurous territory of hákarl (fermented shark)—a rite of passage for the exceptionally brave.

In the evenings, Reykjavik comes alive with a vibrant nightlife scene. From cozy bars serving craft beers to lively venues hosting local musicians, there’s something for every taste.

Here you will find a lively coffee culture as well—Reykjavik’s cafés are the perfect spot to warm up, reflect on the day, and plan the next.
